It’s that time of year again…”New Year’s Resolutions”. I can feel you cringing (as I do) about the mere thought of it. By avoiding the wimpy word ‘resolution’ and choosing more positive affirming words we set an intention similar to scoring a goal in sports!

Also, you may be successful with S.M.A.R.T. Goals by tracking them with Milestone Celebrations!

SMART system: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound. Such clarity provides motivation and focus for attainable and meaningful goals.

Specific = Think of the 5 “w” questions:

  • What do I want to accomplish?
  • Where?
  • Why is it important?
  • Who is involved?
  • Which resources or limits are involved?

Measurable = The excitement and thrill of attaining your achievement:

  • How much?
  • How many?
  • How will I know when it is accomplished?

Achievable = How: Stretching your abilities but still remaining realistic. Previously overlooked opportunities or resources can be revealed to achieve successful completion.
Watch out’s: Be sure to identify anything that someone else has power over and you cannot control. This could result in frustration and unachievable successes.

Relevant: Making sure that questions like the following are a definite YES!:

  • Is this the right time?
  • Is this really worthwhile?
  • Is this really MY goal? (Or is it really someone else’s goal?)
  • Is it possible during this current socio-economic environment? Should I wait?

Time-Bound = Target Date for focusing achievement. Asking yourself “When”?

  • What can I achieve today?
  • Weeks from now?
  • Months from now? This helps prevent everyday tasks from overpowering your long-term goals, dreams, successes.

Additional Tidbits for further Success:

  1. Dividing into categories can be helpful. Such as:
    • Mind
    • Body
    • Health
    • Career
    • Finances
    • Family & Friends
    • Exploration
    • Reflection
    • Gratitude
  2. Populate a calendar (digital or hard copy) and populate mandatory, reoccurring events, appointments, commitments BEFORE extrapolating out your goals.
  3. Consider journaling (digital or by writing). This provides many benefits:
    A. Shows progress, reflection, creativity for resolving dilemmas or relaxing your brain.
    B. Stop Ruminating! Get those thoughts OUT OF YOUR HEAD. C. Allows you to brainstorm and remember your ideas that may later prove to be gold nuggets to your goal.

VIP. Don’t Forget! Keeping track is important to celebrate your Milestones!
